What Is the Correct Route Order for Char Dham?

Tradition follows west to east: Yamunotri first, then Gangotri, then Kedarnath, and finally Badrinath. A typical 10-day run from Dehradun looks like this:

• Day 1-2: Dehradun to Barkot; trek to Yamunotri and back
• Day 3-4: Barkot to Uttarkashi; darshan at Gangotri
• Day 5-7: Uttarkashi to Guptkashi; Sonprayag, trek to Kedarnath and return
• Day 8-9: Guptkashi to Badrinath via Chopta; darshan and Mana village
• Day 10: Badrinath back to Dehradun via Rishikesh

Three reasons come up in almost every review we receive. First, flexibility - if the queue at Kedarnath runs long, your cab simply waits; no missed connections. Second, the driver doubles as a route guide who knows where to stop for the best food, fuel and phone network. Third, elderly yatris get door-to-door comfort that shared transport simply cannot offer.

When Should You Book?

The kapat open in late April or early May and close around Diwali. May-June and September-October are the sweet spots. Vehicles for the opening weeks sell out fast - booking 3-4 weeks ahead locks your vehicle and driver. Registration on the Uttarakhand tourism portal is mandatory for all yatris, so keep those documents ready too.

Which Vehicle Should You Choose for the Yatra?

This is the question we answer most often on the phone. For a couple or a small family of four, a Sedan keeps the cost lowest, though luggage space gets tight with winter clothing. Groups of five to six should look straight at the Innova Crysta - the extra ground clearance and stronger brakes genuinely matter on the Kedarnath and Badrinath stretches. For a joint family or society group of ten to twelve, a Tempo Traveller works out cheapest per head and keeps everyone together for bhajans on the move.

What Should You Pack and Prepare?

• Documents: Yatra registration printout, Aadhaar cards, and two passport photos each
• Clothing: Even in June, Badrinath evenings drop below 10 C - carry proper woollens
• Medicines: Regular prescriptions plus something for motion sickness; the Uttarkashi-Guptkashi stretch has relentless bends
• Cash: ATMs beyond Srinagar are unreliable; carry enough for offerings, ponies and small purchases
• Footwear: Broken-in walking shoes - the Kedarnath trek punishes new shoes

How Do Roads and Weather Behave Season-wise?

May and June are the rush months - roads are dry, but expect queues at darshan and pre-book hotels. July and August bring monsoon; the yatra continues but landslide halts of two to four hours are routine, so we build buffer days into monsoon itineraries. September and October are our personal favourites - washed skies, thin crowds and comfortable driving temperatures.
