The temple on the ridge

Kartik Swami temple is dedicated to Kartikeya, and it sits on a ridge with an open view of the Garhwal Himalaya, Chaukhamba included. Published altitudes disagree, from about 2,540 m to about 3,050 m, but everyone agrees the view is the point. The walk from Kanakchauri is about 3 km one way. The final section is a flight of around 80 steep steps, and visitors describe hearing the temple's hundreds of bells well before they reach the top. Round trip on foot takes most people 3 to 4 hours including time at the temple.

How the road goes

The road takes you via Rishikesh, Devprayag and Rudraprayag, then up the side road to Kanakchauri. Kanakchauri is about 38 to 40 km from Rudraprayag on the road towards Pokhari. Devprayag, where the Ganga is formed, is the classic short stop. Rudraprayag is the last proper town before the side road to Kanakchauri, so it is the place for fuel, cash and any shopping you forgot.

Why two days works best

Six hours of driving, then a trek, then six hours back is too much for one day, and sunrise at the temple is the best time to see the peaks. The common plan is to drive up on day one, stay near Kanakchauri or Rudraprayag, trek early on day two and drive back. A 6 am start from Dehradun gets you to Kanakchauri by early afternoon, with time to settle in and rest before the dawn trek. That plan also suits Chopta. Which car

A sedan is fine for up to four people. Families with luggage for a night away are more comfortable in an Ertiga or Innova Crysta on the Rudraprayag side roads.

What to carry for the trek

The ridge is cold at dawn in every season. Carry a warm jacket, a torch or headlamp for the early start, water and good shoes. The path is rocky in places and the last steps are steep, so trekking poles help older walkers.
