The long way west
There is no short road from Dehradun to Kangra. The route goes west through Paonta Sahib and Nahan to the plains at Kala Amb, on to Chandigarh, and then north through Ropar and Una to the Kangra valley, with the Dhauladhar range rising ahead for the last two hours. Nearly 400 km, and the last 100 are hill road. We do it in a day on a 5 am start, but many people break it at Chandigarh or Una and arrive in McLeod Ganj rested.
Say where you are staying. Dharamshala is the town in the valley; McLeod Ganj is 10 km above it and is where the monastery, the market and most of the guesthouses are; Bhagsu and Dharamkot are a further 2 to 3 km up narrow lanes. The drop changes by an hour depending on which.

March to June and September to November are the easy months. December to February is cold in McLeod Ganj with snow on Triund and sometimes in the town; the road is fine. Monsoon in Kangra is heavy — Dharamshala gets some of the highest rainfall in Himachal — and the last 100 km slow badly; we would plan two days.
5 am for the one-day version. For the two-day version an afternoon start to Chandigarh works, then the valley next morning.
