A drop, not a drive-through
Govindghat is not somewhere you drive to and back in a day. The road ends at the Alaknanda bridge; from there it is a 4 km shared-jeep or walk to Pulna, then a 10 km trek to Ghangaria, and from Ghangaria a further 6 km to Hemkund Sahib or 4 km into the Valley of Flowers. Realistically that is a two-night trip minimum.
So the booking that makes sense is a one-way drop from Dehradun, with a pickup arranged for the day you come down. We keep the return flexible by a day either way because weather on the trek decides when you finish, not the calendar.

Season is everything on this route
Govindghat only matters between late May and early October, when Hemkund Sahib is open. June and September are the easiest months on the road. July and August bring the flowers and the rain together, and the Chamoli-to-Govindghat stretch can close for hours after a slide; we build in a spare day on the return and tell you so at booking.
Outside the season the gurdwara is closed and the treks are snowbound. We will still drive you to Govindghat or Badrinath, but ask what you are going for first, because the answer changes the plan.

No vehicle can. The road ends at Govindghat. From there it is a shared jeep to Pulna, a 10 km trek to Ghangaria, and a further 6 km on foot to the gurdwara at 4,329 m. Ponies, porters and a seasonal helicopter cover parts of it.
How do I book the return if I do not know which day I will come down?
Give us a target date and we hold it flexible by a day either side. Your driver stays reachable by phone; when you reach Ghangaria on the way down, one call fixes the pickup at Govindghat next morning.
Is it worth combining Badrinath with this trip?
Very much. Badrinath is only 25 km beyond Govindghat. Most people do the darshan on the way back down, the same day they come off the trek, and halt at Joshimath that night.
Does the road stay open in July and August?
Usually, with interruptions. Slides near Pipalkoti and Helang can shut the road for a few hours at a time. We keep a spare day on the return leg in these months and would rather tell you that now than on the day.
