Pauri is the district headquarters of Pauri Garhwal, which is why it exists where it does — on a ridge above Srinagar with a view most hill stations would charge for. The Kandoliya temple ridge looks straight at the Chaukhamba range, and on a clear winter day Nanda Devi and Trishul line up beyond. There is no mall road and no traffic jam. People come for Khirsu, 19 km on through oak forest, for the Kyunkaleshwar temple, and for the quiet.
The drive is the first two-thirds of the Badrinath corridor: Rishikesh, the Ganga to Devprayag, the Alaknanda to Srinagar. Then the road leaves the river and climbs. Alternatively we can come up from Kotdwar through Lansdowne, which is longer but avoids the Rishikesh side entirely.
