Why Guptkashi and not Gaurikund
Gaurikund, where the Kedarnath trek starts, has very little room and fills up early in the season. Guptkashi has the hotels, the market, the Vishwanath temple and, crucially, the sleep. Nearly every pilgrim halts here, goes to Sonprayag at dawn, and takes the shuttle to Gaurikund. If you are flying to Kedarnath, the Phata and Sitapur helipads are 10 and 17 km beyond Guptkashi, so it works as a base for that too.
The road turns off the Badrinath corridor at Rudraprayag and follows the Mandakini north through Tilwara and Agastyamuni. It is narrower than the Alaknanda road and slower for it; the last 70 km from Rudraprayag take close to two and a half hours.

Season and the Kedarnath calendar
Kedarnath opens in late April or early May and closes around Bhai Dooj in late October or early November, and Guptkashi runs on that calendar. May, June, September and October are the months to go. July and August are the monsoon — the road stays open with interruptions, the valley is green and quiet, and we allow an extra hour and a spare day.
In winter the temple is closed and its deity moves to Ukhimath, 13 km from Guptkashi. The road is open and the valley is beautiful in snow, but there is no trek and few hotels. Ask us before booking a winter run.
