Where the road splits
Karnaprayag is the last of the Panch Prayag you reach before the Badrinath corridor climbs seriously, and the point where you choose. North goes to Chamoli, Joshimath and Badrinath. East, the road over Gwaldam is the direct way from Garhwal into Kumaon — Kausani is 90 km on, Bageshwar and Almora beyond. That makes Karnaprayag a useful night halt on a long circuit, and a straightforward day's drive from Dehradun on its own.
The town is also the future railhead of the Rishikesh-Karnaprayag line; until it opens, the road is the only way, and it is the same two-lane Alaknanda valley road as everywhere on this corridor.

Open all year. The Badrinath corridor traffic runs May to October, and Karnaprayag is quiet outside it. In monsoon the Alaknanda road has its usual short closures and we allow an extra hour. The Gwaldam road into Kumaon is fine in most weather but slow after snow in January and February.
A 5 or 6 am departure from Dehradun reaches Karnaprayag for a late lunch, in time to carry on to Chamoli or Gwaldam the same afternoon if you want to.
