Dehradun to Kausani Taxi Service

334 km  |  9–10 hours  |  one-way drop or round trip
Nanda Devi views Two routes in Tea gardens & Baijnath

Quick answer: Kausani is about 334 km from Dehradun and takes 9 to 10 hours. It is the Kumaon ridge village Gandhi called the Switzerland of India for one reason: a 300 km sweep of Himalayan snow peaks, Nanda Devi to Panchachuli, straight ahead from every hotel balcony. Two roads get there; we choose by season. Start at 5 am and you arrive for the sunset. Fares depend on vehicle and whether you need a one-way drop or a round trip — the table below is live from our rate desk. Call 7830211223 to confirm.

Two ways in, and why we pick one

The plains road goes Haridwar, Najibabad, Kashipur, Ramnagar, then up through Almora and on to Kausani — about 334 km. It is the steadier drive and the one we use most of the year, with lunch at Ramnagar and tea at Almora. The hill road goes up the Alaknanda to Karnaprayag, over the Gwaldam pass and down through Baijnath to Kausani, roughly the same distance but slower and far prettier, and it is the way to go if you are coming from or going on to Badrinath.

Either way it is a full day. Kausani rewards an evening arrival: the peaks catch the last light and the whole ridge turns out to watch.

Via the plains and Almora

  • Haridwar → Najibabad → Kashipur — 200 km of plains
  • Ramnagar — the Corbett gate, lunch
  • Almora (290 km) — the climb into Kumaon
  • Kausani (334 km) — the last 50 km on the ridge

Via Karnaprayag and Gwaldam

  • Rishikesh → Srinagar → Karnaprayag — the Alaknanda
  • Gwaldam — the pass from Garhwal into Kumaon
  • Baijnath — the 12th-century temple complex
  • Kausani — 20 km on

What you came for

  • The peak panorama at dawn: Nanda Devi, Trishul, Nanda Kot, Panchachuli
  • Anasakti Ashram, where Gandhi stayed in 1929
  • The Kausani tea estate, a working garden with a tasting room
  • Rudradhari falls and the Pinnath temple walk

Worth adding

  • Baijnath — 17 km, the Katyuri temples
  • Bageshwar — 40 km, the Saryu-Gomti sangam
  • Almora and Binsar on the way out
  • Chaukori — 90 km on for a second ridge view

Season

October to March gives the clearest peaks, and the winter mornings are what people remember. April to June is warm and hazy some days; the views are best at dawn. Monsoon hides the mountains completely for weeks and both roads slow down; we would not recommend Kausani in July or August unless you are there for the green.

A 5 am departure reaches Kausani for sunset. Later than 7 am and you arrive in the dark and miss the point of the day.

Dehradun to Kausani taxi — questions people ask

How far is Kausani from Dehradun?

About 334 km by road, 9 to 10 hours, via Haridwar, Ramnagar and Almora or via Karnaprayag and Gwaldam. Both are full-day drives.

Which route is better?

The Almora road most of the year: steadier, with lunch at Ramnagar. The Gwaldam road if you are combining Kausani with Badrinath or want the scenery; it is slower. We pick on the day and tell you.

When can I see the peaks?

October to March, at dawn, almost every day. Summer mornings are often clear before the haze builds. Monsoon hides them entirely.

Can I combine Kausani with Almora, Binsar or Ranikhet?

Yes, they are all within 50 km of each other on the Kumaon ridges. A three or four day circuit with the same driver is the usual plan; ask for one quote.

Is a one-way drop to Kausani available?

Yes. A one-way drop is priced as one-way, and the fare table on this page shows the vehicle rates. Call 7830211223 for a confirmed quote.
