The short road into Himachal
From Dehradun the road west crosses the Yamuna at Paonta Sahib and is in Himachal from there: Nahan, the old Sirmaur capital, then Kala Amb and down to Dharampur on the Chandigarh-Shimla highway. Kasauli is 12 km up from Dharampur. It is a road we drive often for Shimla and Chandigarh, and Kasauli is the stop most people miss.
The town is army cantonment, which is why it is quiet: building is controlled, the mall is short, and Monkey Point, the highest spot, is inside an air force station and needs an ID to enter. Sunset from the Upper Mall looks down on Chandigarh's lights and, on a clear night, Ambala's.

Open all year. March to June and September to November are the easy months. December to February is cold with occasional snow, which is when Kasauli is prettiest and emptiest; the road is fine. Monsoon is wet on the Nahan section and slides are possible; we allow an extra hour.
This is one of the few hill routes where an afternoon start from Dehradun still works; there is no gate and the climb from Dharampur is short.
