Quick answer: Shimla is about 292 km from Jolly Grant Airport and takes 7 to 8 hours. The road goes back through Dehradun, crosses the Yamuna into Himachal at Paonta Sahib, climbs through Nahan, and joins the Kalka-Shimla highway at Solan. It is a full day but a scenic one, and it is the only sensible way to reach Shimla by air from the east: Shimla's own airport has almost no flights. Fares depend on vehicle and whether you need a one-way drop or a round trip — the table below is live from our rate desk. Call 7830211223 to confirm.
There are two ways from Dehradun to Shimla. The short one crosses the Yamuna at Paonta Sahib, climbs through Nahan and the Sirmaur hills, and joins the main Kalka-Shimla highway at Solan — about 292 km from the airport. The other goes down to Saharanpur and Yamunanagar and up through Kalka, longer and flatter. We take the Paonta road unless it is closed, because it saves an hour and the Nahan section is a pleasure to drive.
Shimla itself restricts vehicles in the centre. The drop is at your hotel's nearest vehicle point, or at the lift or the old bus stand, and we sort the last stretch with the porters.
All year. April to June and September to November are the settled months. December to February brings snow above Solan; the road is cleared but slow, and the driver carries chains. Monsoon is wet on the Nahan section and slides are possible; we allow an extra hour and use the Kalka road if Paonta is shut.
A morning landing at Jolly Grant makes this a comfortable single day. An afternoon landing still works but arrives after dark; we prefer to do the Nahan-to-Solan hills in daylight in winter.

About 292 km and 7 to 8 hours via Dehradun, Paonta Sahib, Nahan and Solan. The Kalka road is longer.
Shimla's own airport has very few flights and Chandigarh is 115 km from Shimla anyway. For anyone coming from the east or north-east, Jolly Grant with a taxi is the practical route, and it lets you combine Uttarakhand and Himachal in one trip.
Paonta Sahib, Nahan and Solan, unless it is closed. It saves an hour over the Kalka road and is the more scenic of the two.
At the nearest vehicle point; central Shimla restricts traffic. We coordinate the last stretch with the hotel and the porters.
Yes. Shimla to Chandigarh airport is about 115 km, three to four hours. Book it as a one-way drop and fly home from there.
