About the distance, and about the crowd
Two things worth knowing before you book. First, Kufri is 293 km from Dehradun by road, not the 170 that several sites quote — that figure is the straight line and no road follows it. The drive is Paonta Sahib, Nahan, Solan, Shimla and on, a full day. Second, in the snow weeks of December and January the last 5 km into Kufri become a queue of cars from Shimla, and the roadside pony stands and the Mahasu Peak track are busy. Arrive early or go on a weekday.
Outside those weeks Kufri is a quiet ridge at 2,700 m with a nature park, apple orchards on the Fagu side, and a view that on a clear day reaches Badrinath. We often suggest it as a stop on the way to Narkanda or Chail rather than the end of the road.
