The town that stays open when Kedarnath closes
From around Bhai Dooj until the temple reopens in spring, the Kedarnath deity is carried down to the Omkareshwar temple at Ukhimath, and the winter puja happens here. It is the only way to have a Kedarnath darshan between November and April, and the road is open the whole time. In winter it is also far quieter than the summer yatra towns.
The second reason to come is the road that leaves Ukhimath for Chopta, 30 km on, with the Tungnath temple and Chandrashila peak above it and Deoria Tal a short walk off the same road. That road continues to Gopeshwar and Chamoli, which is how a Kedarnath-to-Badrinath circuit avoids going back through Rudraprayag.

In the yatra months (May to October) Ukhimath is the calm alternative halt to Guptkashi and the start of the Chopta road, which is at its greenest in September. From November to April it becomes the point of the trip: winter darshan at Omkareshwar, Deoria Tal in clear cold air, and Chopta under snow from late December. Chains and an experienced driver matter on the Chopta stretch in winter.
Monsoon (July-August) is wet and the roads above Ukhimath can be blocked by slides for a few hours at a time. We keep a spare day.
