Why it is a sanctuary, not a hill station
Binsar was the summer seat of the Chand rajas and became a wildlife sanctuary in 1988, so there is no bazaar, no mall, and no building past the gate that was not already there. The road from Almora climbs through Ayarpani to the sanctuary gate, where an entry fee is paid and the forest road continues 10 km to the rest house. From there Zero Point is a 2 km walk through oak and rhododendron to a viewing tower and the reason for the trip: Kedarnath, Chaukhamba, Trishul, Nanda Devi, Nanda Kot and Panchachuli in one line.
It is a full day from Dehradun. We reach Almora by mid-afternoon on a 5 am start and the sanctuary gate an hour later, in time for the walk before dark or, better, at dawn the next day.

April and May bring rhododendron. Monsoon hides everything and the forest road gets slippery; we would not recommend it.
