The shape of the trip
Up the Alaknanda to Rudraprayag, then left up the Mandakini through Tilwara and Agastyamuni to Guptkashi, the valley's main town and where nearly everyone sleeps. Next morning: Sonprayag by 5 am, the shuttle to Gaurikund, and the 16 km climb to the temple with Bhimbali and Lincholi as rest points. Most people sleep at Kedarnath and come down the next day. Three days minimum from Rishikesh; four is comfortable.

The Kedarnath calendar
Open late April or early May to around Bhai Dooj. May-June are crowded; September-October are clearer and our preferred time. July-August are wet, the trek is slippery and helicopters cancel often; keep a spare day. Outside the season there is no trek, no flights, and the deity is at Ukhimath.
